Almonds are the most popular nuts in the United States. A favorite of dieters, nuts have become famous in recent years for their versatility and health benefits.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans’ demand for nuts has increased by more than 40 percent since the 1980s. In 2016, Americans ate an average of 1.8 pounds. (816 g) nuts each.
There are good reasons about love. “Almonds have been extensively studied for their benefits to heart health, diabetes and weight management,” said Jenny Heap, a registered dietitian at the Almond Board in California. “Almonds’ unique nutritional combinations – plant-based proteins, fiber and monounsaturated fats, and key nutrients such as vitamin E and magnesium – help make them heart-healthy snacks.”
A 2017 study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that Americans, especially children, who substituted breakfast foods with nuts or other tree nuts, saw a significant increase in nutritional intake. In a study of more than 17,000 children and adults, participants removed all their breakfast nuts and accompanying them. The researchers found that participants ate fewer calories, solid fats, sodium, saturated fats, sugars and added sugars. Good oils and fats such as magnesium, fiber and protein have increased significantly in the short term.
